1977: When men were men and lapels had their own area codes

Brooks Brothers recently posted a scan from a 1977 with the comment "And yes, the lapels were indeed a bit wider." We were probably supposed to have a little chuckle at this, but it does invite comparison with their current offerings. Brooks' only truly modern fitting jacket is the Fitzgerald cut (shown right), which has woefully inadequate little lapels that will soon render it dated and unwearable. The 1977 coats frankly look a lot better (to say nothing of the kick-ass plaid trousers). Maybe the older coats could use a little tailoring at the waist, but that's an easy fix—whereas if your lapels are too narrow, there's nothing you can do about it other than buy a new coat.
