Workwear costumes may be thankfully over, but a nice ripple effect of the trend is a renewed interest in classic materials and patterns (see previous articles on chambray and madras). There's a ton of gingham out there right now, and it largely works best in tight grid neutrals that read more like a rich texture than a distinct pattern when viewed from a few paces. L.L.Bean Signature does a good basic navy casual shirt (left). MyTailor has some great tan and brown twills and broadcloths (right). Better to avoid light purples, oranges, pinks, etc. You won't look like Gene Autry. You'll look like a French cross-dresser.
