George Tooker at PAFA | Buy

Tooker's best-known work may be his Orwellian, cold war-influenced paintings from the 1950s, but (unfortunately) his paranoid visions of public isolation and an oppressive, dehumanizing government became as relevant as ever over the past few years. The retrospective exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy contains all of his trademark dark visions but also a wealth of uplifting, spiritual and often sensual and intimate works. Catch the show at PAFA if you can, and order the outstanding catalogue if you can't.
