This would work best with a 2-button suit so that the cardigan will be visible when you're buttoned up. Make sure the cardigan is light weight and a solid colour. And a noticeably different colour from the suit, so that it doesn't read like a three-piece—like a grey cardigan with a black suit, or camel tan with navy or brown.
