Mailbag: Digital Watches

Matt writes: "I've always liked digital watches ever since I got my first one at age 5. I know they aren't very classy but have they maybe become sort of retro cool? Is there any way to be fashionable while wearing one?" Answer: We think you already know the answer, Matt. No, there's no way to be stylish while wearing a digital watch, but you can at least sort of mitigate the damage. If you're wearing the watch during sports or exercise, which is of course perfectly acceptable, you might want to seek out product from Philippe Starck's recent collaboration with Fossil (left and center). Think of it not as an uncool watch but as a particularly well designed piece of training equipment. If you have to wear a digital watch outside the gym, go for something minimal like Ross McBride's Skew Watch (right), which we found at MoMA but is hopefully available somewhere else without a gold case.
