Mailbag: Iron Rangers or Iron Works?

Mills writes: "Red Wing Iron Rangers or L.L.Bean Katahdin Iron Works?" Answer: Hoo boy, are we conflicted about this one—not the choice you're presented with, but on this style of boot in general. The "iron" cap-toe pseudo-workboot could be the winter equivalent of Clarks Desert Boots, a timeless classic you can wear with anything from denim to a cotton suit. Or it could be the male equivalent of Uggs, a well-made and highly useful piece of gear that (for women, anyway) has become so ubiquitous that the only people still buying them at this point look like sheep. Could go either way, you know?

That probably wasn't helpful, Mills. OK, if you like the look of the Iron Rangers enough to pay the extra $100 for them, go ahead. You can't really go wrong with either. For now, anyway.
