Mailbag: Printed T-Shirts

SL asks: "Is it ever under any circumstances fashionable to wear a printed t shirt?" Answer: You've probably already figured out that you can't wear a printed t-shirt and look stylish, but as heretical as it seems, there are some occasions that transcend style. As the 2011 exhibition The Peacock Male reminds us, the practice of wearing clothes to display tribal affiliation is as old as clothing itself... and in the 21st century, our tribes are represented by our sports teams. That said, if you're choosing a t-shirt to wear to a sporting event, you can at least mitigate the visual damage by choosing the simplest design possible: clean and iconic, few colours, no photographs or layered images, no player references, and absolutely no lettering outside of the team logo itself. One might make an exception to the "no photos" rule for the awesome "Jim Leyland smoking" Detroit Tigers shirt, although its colour renders it damn near unwearable.
