Mailbag: Retirement Shoes | Buy

Joe C. writes, "I'm recently retired, and determined not to spend my days in sneakers and flip-flops like everybody else my age. At the same time, my budget is of course limited. Can you suggest some comfortable, yet affordable footwear for an older gentleman on fixed income?" Answer: We really like suede as a comfortable, casual material at any age. We previously mentioned desert boots, which are versatile, under $100 and literally never go out of style. American Eagle also has some nice-looking suede bucks (shown) for a mere $60. We like the heavy rubber sole on those. And there's nothing wrong with sneakers per se; just avoid logoed/striped crap for runners and stick to simple canvas shoes.
