Mailbag: Three-button suits really OK?

Andres writes: "Are you sure the 3-button suit isn't out of style? Because I keep hearing it is." Answer: The important thing is not the number of buttons, but rather, the depth of the "v" created by your lapel length. A 3-button with really short lapels is a bit dated, but even worse is a 2-button open to the navel, as exhibited by elderly newscasters and Republican politicians. If your 3-button doesn't give you enough chest real estate, then make like the Burberry model shown here and only use the middle button. Pull the lapels open just a little. And of course lose the tie.
