Answer: We miss bowling alleys because they make us think of Christina Ricci in Buffalo '66. Doing a retro shoe is not in itself a bad idea, but as you correctly observed, most tend to overdo it with hideous results. Cole Haan kept it simple with the rather nice Air Ventura.
