Mailbag: What is modern fit, anyway?

JLC writes: What do you guys mean when you talk about modern or contemporary fit? Answer: A lot of trends are short-lived by design, due to the need for clothiers to keep selling us new crap every year. But taken over time, a few solid trends have emerged. Trousers have become slimmer, lower-rise at the waist, and with straighter legs (you can ignore both tapered and boot cuts); pleats have been largely eliminated (thank heavens). For shirts and suit coats of all kind, the waist is fitted, with higher armholes and straighter sleeves. Modern short sleeves hit mid-bicep instead of down by the elbow. All of these trends are inherently flattering and have the longevity to be good style investments. (Shown: Ralph Lauren Black Label suit.)
