Sarah Stolfa: The Regulars | Buy

As one could imagine, you'll meet a lot of interesting characters if you spend a lot of time at a cheap pub in downtown Philly. But unless you tend bar, you probably don't get the chance to really study them. Bartender and photographer Sarah Stolfa gives us that opportunity with The Regulars, a compendium of portraits of her diverse customers at McGlinchey's. Each is a fascinating, sometimes weathered landscape of humanity, offered with minimal commentary—although the copy includes a hilarious statistical analysis of the photos' contents ("Clear or probable absence of wedding band: 19"). The back story of each barfly is left for the viewer to imagine, and there's enough depth and texture in each photo to piece a pretty good one together.
