What makes a piece interesting?

A Lagerfeld shirt that recently appeared on menalamode.com has us contemplating what changes an ordinary piece into an interesting one. The fitted shape is more or less standard for contemporary dress and sport shirts, but this one adds some variations: a big epic collar, a pieced front panel, a seam down the middle of the back, a covered placket, and a diagonal French cuff with the buttonhole way up at the wrist. This is a great shirt, but a bit of gilding the lily perhaps. It would have been fine with just the collar and the angled cuffs; the other details might be excessive. Of course, you don't shop Lagerfeld if you're looking to tone it down.
