An anonymous reader asks, "Are shoulder and tote bags the only acceptable kinds? Is there any way subway and bus commuters can carry a load with a long walk and still look (un)refined?" Answer: We think we know what you're getting at here, and the unfortunate reality is that there's no way to look cool while wearing a backpack. And there's no way to even rise above the "holy mother, look at that f**king dork" level when dragging anything with wheels on it. So if you really need this sort of thing, well, maybe there are more important parameters than looking good—like not needing spinal surgery before your 40th birthday. At least try to mitigate the damage by going with something reasonably high in quality, like L.L. Bean's classic leather rucksack (left) or Filson's business pack (right).
