Mailbag: The classic trench coat and its modern alternatives
L.A. Martin writes: "I'm looking to get a raincoat. How do you guys feel about the classic London Fog type khaki trench coat?" Answer: That's a safe bet, and there's nothing wrong with it, but you do have more interesting options. Topman (left) makes a whole series of great cropped coats with rich textures. Hackett (middle) does both standard and updated variants, with details like leather buckles, including some nice rich colours like this almost purplish navy. (Notice how we instinctively go to the British for this sort of stuff?) And if you're willing to branch out a little from the trench coat in your search for rain protection, Nau still makes one of our favourite jackets ever (right), a recycled-poly riding jacket that is extremely flattering and durable as hell.
