Three generations into their battle for console gaming supremacy, Sony and Microsoft have doubtless sunk millions into the design of their latest hardware, which makes the following fact all the more amazing: not only are both consoles extremely ugly, they are both extremely ugly in the same way, presenting bisected black rectangles that alternate matte and gloss elements and a slot for loading discs. It hardly seems possible, given Microsoft's experimentation with organic curves in the 360 and Sony's history of elegant product design, but here we are—countless man-hours of iterative R&D leading us to a couple of living-room eyesores. Hopefully they perform better than they look.
